It’s Time for a Quick Covid Check-in
How’s everyone doing? I’ll try to keep this relatively short and… well, I’m afraid I don’t have “sweet” in me under the best of circumstances, but would you settle for not too morose? In case some AI bot or Generation AA wunderkind stumbles across this blog post decades from now without context, the world is currently in the midst of the Covid-19 crazy (or more popularly, The Great Toilet Paper Run of 2020), with many saying the United States is now the epicenter. Here in the state of Hawaii, we’re under a “stay at home” order for all but essential workers. Read more…
The Return of Feral Pig Friday, with Video Evidence
If you’ve been reading my blog long, you’ll know that 1) living on Hawaii Island isn’t like living in most places, and 2) it probably also isn’t what you expected. Although beautiful in its own way, there is a conspicuous absence of white sand beaches (at least on the windward side), and a conspicuous absence of me sitting on them, with or without umbrella drinks. Instead life here tends to be grittier, what with living off the grid and lava drama and rats and fire ants and hurricanes and… where was I? Oh, yeah—you may recall a few posts ago, Read more…
Help Create Syd #7, and Win a Sanctuary for Homeless Smoothies!
I was going to do this a little later in the month, but things are moving, people! Tech things in the background that wait for no mere human. I’ll tell you more about those soon. But first… I need your help. I’m editing the Sydney #7 manuscript now. Well, now-ish obviously. As soon as I finish this post, I’ll be back at it. Syd #7 will be a door-stopper of a novel, and those of you on my List, you’ll learn the title in the June Newsletter. Mwah-ha-hah! Barring anything crazy, you should all have it in your hands (or Read more…
Raking is Hard, and Other Grief Confessions
Thank you to everyone for the warm wishes on the passing of poor Fritz. It’s an experience many of us have shared, so the Humans get hugs (virtual or otherwise), but we tend to forget about the effects on the rest of the pack. I’m certain animals have their own grieving processes. Ninja Kitty has been ridiculously affectionate, always wanting love, but is beginning to transition back toward his default state of obnoxiousness. Travis and Fred seem more subdued generally, especially Fred. Of course, it’s easy to project our own feelings onto our pets, so I try not to read Read more…
Checking In, After Checking Out
I missed the blog post last week—for reasons I’ll share below—and I’ve been mostly off email and social media lately, so I wanted to at least do a quick check-in today. How is everybody? Between the ridiculous cold in the United States and the ridiculous heat in Australia, I’m guessing a decent number of responses would be, “Fairly shitty, but thanks for asking.” Or at least, fairly uncomfortable. I can’t complain about comfort. Here in East Hawaii, we’ve had nothing extraordinary temperature- or precipitation-wise (although we could use some rain as our roads and catchment tanks are feeling parched). But Read more…
