Checking In, After Checking Out

I missed the blog post last week—for reasons I’ll share below—and I’ve been mostly off email and social media lately, so I wanted to at least do a quick check-in today. How is everybody? Between the ridiculous cold in the United States and the ridiculous heat in Australia, I’m guessing a decent number of responses would be, “Fairly shitty, but thanks for asking.” Or at least, fairly uncomfortable. I can’t complain about comfort. Here in East Hawaii, we’ve had nothing extraordinary temperature- or precipitation-wise (although we could use some rain as our roads and catchment tanks are feeling parched). But Read more…

Feral Pig Friday! (Yes, I Have a Book Out, But I Know You’re Really Interested in Piglets)

It’s been an interesting week here on the rock. We’ve had copious (though generally low intensity) thunderstorms, which makes for lousy satellite internet and a dwindling supply of doggie drugs. The rumbles are due to hit again in about an hour. But the storms are only a small piece of the canine and other mammalian drama (more on the latter later). It seems like there was something else going on, too… Oh yeah—Heir, the final book in my Dead Hollow trilogy is now available! Yahoo! The ebook is everywhere, and the paperback should show up on Amazon any time now, Read more…

Quick Update Before the Humans and Chickens Hunker Down

This will be a quick blog post, and it’s going up a couple of days ahead of time. You may recall me complaining sharing before that maintaining our satellite internet connection is challenging at the best of times. Well, we’re moving into the definitely not best of times tech-wise. After dodging Hurricane Hector a couple of weeks ago, Hawaii is now waving at Hurricane Lane. Here’s a link to a video of the storm taken yesterday by the awesome NOAA Hurricane Hunters. It’s just a rainy window until about thirty seconds in, when the sky opens above and below with Read more…

Lava Bombs: Too Crazy to be True? Not on Hawaii Island

I am such a big fat liar. This shouldn’t surprise you—after all, I am a writer. But it does occasionally surprise me. What did I say in my previous blog post? No more lava updates. Well, that’s not exactly what I said. It was more like, no more regular lava updates. And even though talking about lava in the very next post might seem like a regular update, it’s not. It’s an irregular coincidence. Pinky-swear. Whatever. It may damage my reputation for veracity, but I cannot remain silent. I have to share. Because, as some of my distant friends have Read more…

When a Lava Eruption Becomes the Same Old, Same Old

Thank you to every one who keeps asking about our safety (and that of our dogs), but this will probably be my last regular lava update. I’ll pop in from time to time if something changes, and I’ll still post the occasional picture on Facebook, but honestly we’re at the “same old, same old” stage now. My husband spends many of his working hours and a fair number of his non-paid ones dealing with the impacts of the current eruption, and he dislikes the term “new normal.” It sticks, though, probably because it’s simple and we don’t have a better Read more…
