Here you’ll find progress on current books, behind-the-scenes insight and story inspiration, as well peeks at my life on rural, (usually) rainy East Hawaii Island.
The Blog Menu Dropdown highlights three categories, Hawaii Life(pretty self-explanatory), Stories I Love (also pretty self-explanatory, but includes books, movies, and TV), and Magpie Moments (bits I snatched from real life and incorporated, magpie-like, into my fiction).

I’ve got a lot of balls in the air right now (the metaphorical kind; me attempting to juggle is a precursor to an emergency room visit), and I can’t wait to tell you about them! However, I think I’ll be restrained this week so I can give you more details when I do share. On second thought, I will mention one little thing that’s more of a PSA (public service announcement) than something to be excited about. There’s a bunch of shuffling behind the scenes at my website right now, trying to ensure all its pieces are in working order. Read more…
Short but sweet post this time around. Guess what I did this morning… Yes, I drank coffee. Yes, I yelled at the cat, declared between one and three dogs to be adorable, and told between one and three dogs to stop chewing and/or scratching and/or chasing the cat. Let me rephrase. Guess what I did this morning that you might actually care about… I sent Dead Hollow Book Two to the copy editor. Woo hoo! Happy writer dance! At this point, not calling the book by its name is a little like one of those poor babies being wheeled around Read more…
Hello, Happy Readers! Apologies for the long time, no blog. I’m excited to break the incommunicado streak (Jimmy Buffett earworm, anyone?) and let you know it’s in a good cause and there are cool things on the very near horizon. I’m wiggling in my chair just thinking about it. And not in the way dingbat dog Mr. Dribbles (aka Travis) wiggles by the door. If you’re a Newsletter subscriber, be sure to check your Inbox this weekend. And if you’re not, why aren’t you? 😉 With that tease out of the way, I thought I’d share the latest in Prodigal’s Read more…
I spent much of yesterday morning messing up my website (that wasn’t my goal, I can assure you), and then desperately trying to restore it to its former not-so-glorious, but also not-so-crappy state. My afternoon and much of this morning was devoted to messing up my print files and trying to get Prodigal paperbacks placed with other distributors. Do you see a pattern here? No—not the part where I mess things up. The part where I do things other than writing… That’s right, I finally finished the rough rough (made your dogs look) draft of the second Dead Hollow book. I recently started reading Finders Keepers, the second book in Stephen King’s Mr. Mercedes trilogy. There seems to be a recurrent theme among readers of Stephen King, and even among readers of garden-variety serial killer or other dark crime thrillers. You’ll often see the question asked (or not asked, because people are too afraid to): What kind of person comes up with such twisted ideas? I suspect a close second is: What’s it like to write something like that? Do you have to sleep with the lights on? I’ve shared before that for me, the depth and quality of my emotional involvement with Read more…
