Here you’ll find progress on current books, behind-the-scenes insight and story inspiration, as well peeks at my life on rural, (usually) rainy East Hawaii Island.
The Blog Menu Dropdown highlights three categories, Hawaii Life(pretty self-explanatory), Stories I Love (also pretty self-explanatory, but includes books, movies, and TV), and Magpie Moments (bits I snatched from real life and incorporated, magpie-like, into my fiction).

“I love your dogs.” That’s how I introduced myself to one of the panelists at the writers’ conference I attended last month. Not that I didn’t appreciate the writing and marketing wisdom I’d gleaned from her interviews and articles over the years. But I was jet-lagged, and sleep-deprived, and super-saturated with everything I’d learned at the conference to that point. So what I could remember and articulate was, “I love your dogs.” (She has Viszlas.) I haven’t shared a pack update in a while because they’ve had some challenges, and I try not share things that might bring you down. Read more…
You may have noticed that the blog post is coming out on Saturday instead of my usual Friday. (If not, maybe you need to look around and see if you’re at work when you’re not supposed to be.) There’s a reason for the change in schedule, which I’ll get to in a bit. As I told my Reader Group folks (aka Newsletter, for those of you who aren’t cool kids), this week I approved the first twenty-minute sample of my Heir audiobook—yay! I’m so excited to wrap up the trilogy in audio (you can get it in ebook or paperback Read more…
I know, I know. No blog post last week. Let the beatings begin. But I had a good excuse, I swear. I was off island in a hotel with truly horrendous Wi-Fi in… Wait for it… LAS VEGAS, BABY! Sin City! City of Lost Wages! Glitter Gulch! (I think that last one is just downtown, but I love the alliteration.) You get the idea. Okay, admittedly the crappy Wi-Fi didn’t matter so far as writing a blog post goes because I never had a free moment. In fact, I never got more than four hours of sleep in a night and usually Read more…
It’s been an interesting week here on the rock. We’ve had copious (though generally low intensity) thunderstorms, which makes for lousy satellite internet and a dwindling supply of doggie drugs. The rumbles are due to hit again in about an hour. But the storms are only a small piece of the canine and other mammalian drama (more on the latter later). It seems like there was something else going on, too… Oh yeah—Heir, the final book in my Dead Hollow trilogy is now available! Yahoo! The ebook is everywhere, and the paperback should show up on Amazon any time now, Read more…
Guess who’s frizzle-frazzled this week? Honestly, I’d guess at a minimum most people in the United States, but I can say without equivocation that I AM. And how. There’s the baseline political insanity. I don’t talk politics here, but if you’re reading this post far enough in the future that you’re no longer memorably scarred, just an FYI that we’re in the middle of Kavanaugh Confirmation Crazy. (It took remarkable restraint to use the word crazy rather than a much naughtier and far more satisfying word that starts with c and ends with a similar sound.) I’m proud to say Read more…
